They moved a few times within the state until Abe Lincoln set out to move into the world on his own. While he was a lawyer, he had never received any formal training in the field. He settled in New Salem in 1831, lived apart from his family, and continued working. When he moved to Salem, he met his first love interest, Ann Rutledge. They had a steady relationship but were not engaged. She died in August 1835, most likely of typhoid. Thereafter, Lincoln started courting Mary Owens, but that relationship did not last very long. Finally, he met Mary Ann Todd, whom he ended up marrying.Mary Todd, born in 1818, came from a wealthy, educated, and slave-owning Kentucky family. She was raised in a refined and sophisticated environment. After her mother’s death, her father remarried Elizabeth Humphreys, with whom Mary had a difficult and unstable relationship. She moved to Springfield, Illinois to live with her sister Elizabeth. She met Abraham Lincoln in Springfield, and one year later, they were engaged to be married.
