The observatory became known for its world-class parabolic dish antenna, which used a spherical reflector surface to focus incoming radio waves - a system that would go on to be one of the most influential parts of the Arecibo Observatory.William Gordon, the Arecibo Ionospheric Observatory’s original director, decided on this type of dish surface because of its ability to operate at extremely high frequencies (EHF), which is important for radio astronomy observations. The focal point of the reflector would also be very large in comparison with other antennas at that time; Arecibo was capable of supporting a 551 ft (168 m) antenna at minimum signal strength.Other factors in Arecibo’s construction and design included the observatory’s ability to handle large amounts of power and its relative position in relation to the equatorial plane, where most space launches occurred.
